Maalaea & Lahaina

WAILEA, Maui, HAWAII, Dec 2 - Tuesday started as a cloudy day, but cleared up by early afternoon.  That's when we headed toward Maaalea and Lahaina harbors, in search of a best boat for hire that would take us to Molokini or some other good snorkeling spot in this area.

Maalaea harbor lies at the end of a bay that separates Kihei and Lahaina.  You can see Wailea at across the bay in the middle left shot. It is an ancient sacred space, as you can see from the description on a plaque there (middle right).  So are the two boulders in between of which Elizabeth is standing in the right shot.

We did not find any trips of particular appeal here, so we continued our ride past Buzz's Seafood restaurant (right) into Lahaina.

We went straight to the Lahaina harbor where one can see one of the world's largest banyan trees (two right shots).

Lahaina's is a bigger and richer harbor than that in Maalaea, as you can see from the above photos.

Lahaina is also one of the oldest human settlements in Maui.  The buildings on the left go back to the 19th century when western traders started to arrive here in droves.

On our way back, we witnessed another beautiful Hawaiian sunset.  It left even Elizabeth in awe... as you can see from the rightmost shot.

Later on the same evening, the new "Hula girl" posed in her new Hawaiian wrap (sarong) dress before we went out to dinner.

To be continued...
