Easter Adventure on Kauai, Niihau
From ocean's depths to mountain highs... and everything in between
HAIKU, Maui, Apr 21 - Hello everybody. Hope you are all set for a wonderful Easter weekend. Some people go home for Easter. We will be away. Some stage an Easter egg hunt. We will be on an Easter treasure hunt at Lehua Rock. Saturday is also St. George’s Day, which has a special meaning for me (Djurdjevic translated roughly into McGeorge in English).
Elizabeth and I are off tomorrow morning (Good Friday, also the Earth Day) to an adventure in Kauai and Niihau, the "forbidden island." For those of you who may not be familiar with Hawaiian islands, Niihau is the smallest island of eight major ones. It is still privately owned, and not accessible by tourists. Thus the term "forbidden." So the only way to get there is by boat. Or helicopter.
We are planning to spend Saturday, St. George's Day, at sea. After we sail up Kauai's beautiful Napali Coast (far right), also accessible only by sea (see above promotional pictures), we will sail across to Niihau and Lehua Rock, for some hopefully out-of-this-world snorkeling (middle left shots).
And then on Easter Sunday, weather permitting, we are hoping to do a 4-hr hike in Waimea Canyon at elevations between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, overlooking 2,000-ft vertical drop cliffs, with spectacular views of Niihau and Lehua Rock. At least that’s what the brochures promise. We’ll see...
