Day 16: Preparing and Burning a Despacho

SCOTTSDALE, July 15, 2008 - When I told Jose Luis about my conversation with the spirits in which they told me they would activate the Camelback Mtn spirit (to act as my local server) to allow me to contact them when I get home, he said I should prepare a despacho and burn it at an altar I should build at Camelback, my home mountain.  I already had an altar, I told him, but the rest would take some effort. I only had two days at home before my next trip (to the UK, for crop circles), but I made the despacho a priority task that I wanted to complete before I left home again.

I spent at least half a day shopping for all ingredients at four different AZ food stores, trying to resemble the contents of the despachos we had made in Peru.  By the time I started working on it on my kitchen counter (left), the place looked like a total mess.  It took me over an hour do get make it (middle) and gift-wrap it (right).

The following day, I drove 10 miles south to Camelback Mtn (left) where I made as stone fireplace under my altar to prevent the flames and sparks from spreading.  And then I performed the despacho ceremony and set it on fire.  I suspected I might have been braking some local fire ordinances, but told the mountain spirits, "well, if you really want me to do it to get in touch with you, then you'd better also keep me out of jail."  :-)  And they did.  It was only after I had put out the remaining embers, buried them under the rocks, and headed down the mountain, that a helicopter showed up overhead.  It was probably just a rescue helicopter.  I have seen many of them during the time I had lived under the Camelback's head, so I knew that was nothing unusual.

And that's all she wrote from my Peru adventure. It started with prayers and it ended up in smoke... that carried my prayers all the way to the Andes.
