FROM BANGALORE, INDIA
MUMBAI, July 18, 2007 - I have accidentally erased the original narrative of my first visit to Mumbai on July 14, which I do not have the time recreate, so here are just the photos with basic captions... The landing... Mumbai is on an island. So there are lots of marshy areas around it. The slums around the airport... For more on that, also see "Mumbai, Day 3" from my last visit here in February 2006. Scenes from the airport, including the makeshift baggage handling facilities, constructed of sticks and tarps...
My favorite memory from this visit to Mumbai... a Buddhist monk deeply engrossed in his book of prayers at a modern airport terminal. If you look carefully, you will notice the wooden thongs he is wearing. They have hand-carved wooden bumps protruding between his big toe and the next one, on which he is resting his soles of feat. When the monk eventually got up and walked away, the thongs were clanking away on the marble floors. :-) And that's all she wrote from my first visit to Mumbai... TO BE CONTINUED, hopefully in Bangalore... Back to World Trip July 2007 Index
